Day 04 (2023.10.31) in NY
 
가을 분위기는 점점 크리스마스로 바뀌고 있다. 시차 때문에 여전히 피곤하지만 일찍 깬다. 많이 추워져서 오늘은 패딩을 입었다. 어딜 봐도 멋진 건물이 많다. 집에서 스킨, 로션을 두고 와서, Sephora를 방문했다. 반가운 한국 브랜드의 스킨로션을 집어 들었다. 계산해 주시는 분이 친절하게 웃으며 나를 맞이해 주셨다. 현지인의 작은 미소와 친절만으로 여행자는 행복할 수 있다.
The autumn atmosphere is gradually changing to Christmas. I am still tired because of the time difference, but I wake up early. It got really cold, so I wore a padded jacket today. Everywhere I look, there are lots of nice buildings. I left my skin, lotion at home, so I visited Sephora. I picked up a Korean brand's skin, lotion. The cashier greeted me with a kind smile. Travelers can be happy with a small smile and kindness from the locals.
 
나이가 들어도 대학을 구경하는 것은 언제나 설렌다. 뉴욕의 유명한 대학 중 하나인 NYU를 구경하러 가고 있다. NYU 근처에 오니 역시 대학가라 거리가 깨끗하다. 학교 같은 건물이 많이 보이고 젊은이들도 많이 보인다. 저 멀리 보라색 깃발로 NYU가 보인다. 학교의 상징색이 보라색인 것 같다. 보라색을 상징색으로 쓰는 대학이 국내에 있었나 싶을 정도로 보라색은 학교에서 채택하기 힘든 색일 것 같은데 뉴욕에 있는 대학답게 과감한 선택을 한 것 같다. NYU 북스토어에 왔다. 보라색 이쁜 옷이나 모자 등이 많다. 유명 브랜드와 협업해서 만들어서 옷의 퀄리티가 좋을 것 같다.
Even when I'm old, I'm always excited to see the university. I’m on my way to see NYU, one of the famous universities in New York. Near NYU, the street is clean because it is also a university district. I see a lot of school-like buildings and a lot of young people. I can see NYU in the distance with a purple flag. I think the color of the school is purple. I think purple is a color that is difficult to adopt in schools to the extent that I wonder if there was a university in Korea that uses purple as a symbolic color, but I think it’s a bold choice as a university in New York. I'm at the NYU Bookstore. There are many pretty purple clothes and hats. I think the quality of the clothes will be good because I collaborated with a famous brand.
 
이제 핼러윈 퍼레이드 장소로 이동한다. 가는 길에 워싱턴 스퀘어에 들렸다. 핼러윈 퍼레이드를 구경하기 위해 사람들이 어느새 많이 모였다. 코스튬을 한 사람들도 보이기 시작한다. 대학가 근처 공원이라 그런가, 길거리 공연하는 사람들도 있고 에너지가 넘쳤다. 내가 이렇게 실실 웃는 이유는… 앞에 징징이를 만났기 때문이다. 뉴욕의 핼러윈은 뭔가 심상치 않다는 느낌이 들었다. 핼러윈 퍼레이드 장소와 가까워질수록, 코스튬 하신 분들이 많이 보인다. 다양한 코스튬 스타일과 퀄리티를 보며 입을 다물지 못했다. 코스튬들이 뉴욕과 너무 잘 어울려 어색하지 않았다.
I am moving to the Halloween parade site. I stopped at Washington Square on my way. A lot of people gathered to see the Halloween parade. People in costumes are starting to show, too. Maybe because it was a park near the university, there were people performing on the street and it was full of energy. The reason why I smile like this is… because I met Squidward Tentacles in front of me. I felt that Halloween in New York was something out of the ordinary. As I get closer to the Halloween parade site, I see more people dressed up in costumes. I couldn't keep my mouth shut looking at the various costume styles and quality. The costumes matched well with New York, so it wasn't awkward.
 
드디어 핼러윈 퍼레이드가 시작됐다. 스케일이 정말 어나더 레벨이다. 사람들은 여럿이 또는 혼자서 퍼레이드에 참석했다. 이런 게 진짜 핼러윈 축제구나 실감 났다. 큰 트럭 위에 사람들이 올라타서 퍼포먼스를 보여준다. 그 트럭에 엄청 큰 스피커가 있는데, 베이스 음이 정말 땅이 흔들릴 정도로 커서 신기했다. 퍼레이드 주변에도 다양한 퍼포먼스가 있어 눈이 쉴틈이 없다. 사람들이 많이 참여하는 축제다 보니, 몬스터, 크록스 등 다양한 기업들도 축제에 참여하는 게 신기하다.
Finally, the Halloween parade has begun. The scale is really another level. People attended the parade together or alone. I realized that this is a real Halloween festival. People get on top of a big truck and perform. There was a huge speaker on the truck, and the bass sound was so loud that it shook the ground. There are various performances around the parade, so I can't rest my eyes. Since it is a festival where many people participate, it is amazing that various companies such as Monster and Crocs also participate in the festival.
 
 
Day 05 (2023.11.01) in NY
 
다음 숙소는 뉴저지에 있어서 거기로 이동 중이다. 뉴저지에서 바라본 맨해튼은 정말 이쁘다. 구름이 많아서 그런가 뭔가 하늘에 떠 있는 도시 같다. 뉴저지는 조용하고 높은 건물도 없다. 대부분 가정집인 것 같다. 그런데 오히려 이렇게 조용한 곳이 더 위험할 수도 있다. 도시는 지켜보는 눈이 많아야 안전하다고 한다.
The next hotel is in New Jersey, so I'm on my way there. Manhattan from New Jersey is really pretty. It's like a city in the sky Maybe it's because there are so many clouds. New Jersey is quiet and doesn't even have tall buildings. Most of them seem to be family homes. But a quiet place like this could be more dangerous. The city is said to be safe when there are many eyes watching.
 
랍스터를 먹으러 첼시마켓에 가고 있다. NYU스토어에서 산 모자를 썼다. 법은 1도 모르지만 왠지 법 전공자 모자를 사고 싶었다. 모자를 쓰니 실제 내가 아닌 뭔가 다른 느낌이 들었다.
I'm going to the Chelsea market for lobster. I wore a hat I bought at the NYU store. I don't know the law at all, but I wanted to buy a hat for a law major. Wearing a hat made me feel something different than me.
 
매번 느끼지만, 뉴욕의 길거리 공연의 퀄리티는 정말 최고다. 한참을 공연을 즐겼다. 잠시 감상 타임! 나는 공연비를 지불하지 않을 수 없었다. 저분에게 다가가 팁을 드렸다. 이곳은 음식과 음악이 함께 있는 첼시마켓이다. 지하철에서도 최고의 공연을 종종 볼 수 있다. 뉴욕 지하철이 점점 좋아진다.
I feel it every time, but the quality of New York's street performances is the best. I enjoyed the performance for a long time. Let's listen to it! I had to pay for the performance. I approached him and gave him a tip. This is Chelsea Market with food and music. I can often see the best performances on the subway. I like the New York subway more and more
 
리틀 차이나에 갔다. 이곳에는 아시아 사람들이 많다. 뭔가 마음이 편안하다. 같은 국적은 아니지만 같은 인종이라는 것 만으로 편안한 감정이 들다니 신기하다.
I went to Little China. There are many Asian people here. I feel at ease. It's amazing that I feel comfortable just because we’re not of the same nationality but of the same race.
 
오큘러스라는 건물에 갔다. 고래의 뼈 같이 생겼다. 이 안에는 여러 노선의 지하철이 있고 근처에 세계무역센터가 있어서 오큘러스에는 많은 사람들이 지나다닌다. 검은색 옷을 입은 많은 뉴요커들이 온통 흰색인 건물 안에 있는 모습을 보니 검은색과 흰색이 대비되어 알 수 없는 감정이 들었다. 그리고 마치 우리가 고래 뱃속에 있는 것 같다. 우리가 얼마나 작고 하찮은 존재인가 하는 생각도 든다.
I went to a building called Oculus. It looks like a whale's bone. There are several subway lines inside and there is a World Trade Center nearby, so there are many people passing by Oculus. When I saw many New Yorkers dressed in black inside the building,  which was all white, I felt an unknown feeling in contrast between black and white. And It's like we're in a whale's belly. I also wonder how small and insignificant we are.
 
911 메모리얼에 갔다. 유족들의 한 없는 슬픔과 눈물을 표현했다고 한다. 희생자 분들의 성함이 새겨져 있다. 그때의 참혹한 현장을 생생히 느낄 수 있었다. 그 당시 건물의 흔적을 보여준다. 나는 뉴욕 소방관들에 대한 존경심이 불타올랐다.
I went to 911 Memorial. It is said to express the endless sadness and tears of the bereaved families. The names of the victims are engraved. I could vividly feel the terrible scene at that time. It shows the traces of the building at that time. I have developed respect for New York firefighters
 
 
Day 06 (2023.11.02) in NY
 
가정집이 많은 뉴저지에 머무니까 내가 여행자가 아닌 이곳 주민같은 기분이 들었다. 뉴저지에서 버스를 타고 허드슨 강속 터널을 지나 맨해튼으로 간다. 터널이 유리로 되어 있다면 물고기도 볼 수 있겠다 싶었지만 역시나 일반 터널처럼 벽으로 되어 있어 아쉬웠다.
Staying in New Jersey, where there are many family homes, makes me feel like a resident here, not a traveler. Take a bus from New Jersey, pass through. the Hudson River Tunnel, and go to Manhattan. I thought I could see fish if the tunnel was made of glass but as expected, it’s walled like a regular tunnel. I was sad.
 
오늘은 소호에 왔다. 뉴욕 사람들은 무단횡단을 많이 하는 것 같다. 똑같이 자동차도 종종 신호를 안 지키는 것 같다. 강한 자만이 살아남는 도시이다.
I came to SoHo today. New Yorkers seem to jaywalk a lot. In the same way, cars often don't seem to follow the signal. It is a city where only the strong survive.
